Your adrenal glands are perched 0n top of your kidneys and they play a role in in your weight (especially around your middle), balancing your hormones, uninterrupted sleep, balancing moods, and a fit  immune system.

 Hormones and Adrenals

The adrenals manufacture numerous hormones; regulate blood sugar and the body’s minerals; maintaining  energy levels in conjunction with the thyroid; and monitoring  stress-producing hormones.

The adrenals are the body’s shock absorbers,  they are the core of the endocrine stress response system. Two of their  important hormones, cortisol and adrenaline are the fight -n-flight response. Cortisol is produced as a result of acute and long-term stress primarily.

Prolonged stress as a result of physical, emotional or environmental causes is a diaster  for the adrenals. The results are elevated cortisol levels, with weight gain (especially around the midsection), imbalances in blood sugar, thinning of the skin, memory loss, high blood pressure, hot flashes, night sweats, and excessive facial hair along with other masculizing tendencies.

The overworked adrenals will eventually crash, which leads to adrenal exhaustion, the body is unable to maintain adequate adrenal production. Symptoms include Chronic fatigue syndrome, inability to concentrate, irritability, allergies, addictions to salty and sweet foods, PMS, depression, headaches and low blood pressure can be a key symptom.

Progesterone is the raw primary material that produces cortisol. When these glands go into overdrive, the body diverts progesterone to the adrenals to help support cortisol production. When you have reduced progestrone, the body may experience estrogen dominance, ie, night sweats, migraines, PMS, heavy bleeding, breast tenderness, etc.

Excessive amounts of cortisol blocks progestrone receptors, which will futher contribute to low progestrone.  These imbalances are why adrenal exhaustion leads to estrogen dominance.

To learn more about the role of adrenals for healthy hormonal balance and healthy ageing, Dr. James Wilson, an expert on adrenal issues and author to explore the world of adrenal rejuvenation.
